[bay area] 9/9 – 9/15

September 8th, 2009

Oooh… Definitely check out Mollie Stone’s for their one day produce sale on Wednesday if you can make your way out there:
great prices on organic figs (2.48/basket), broccolini ($1.88/bunch), and grapes ($1.48/lb). They also have some new crop organic apples coming in from Washington and CA for $0.99/lb. This is when I wish there were at least one Mollie Stone’s market in the East Bay…

I can’t believe I haven’t been buying more figs. I also can’t believe that I haven’t bought any of those organic heirloom tomatoes at safeway for $1.99/lb. Definitely a killer deal. Better go stock up on those and have my last summer greens/tomatoes before the colder weather sets in.

Safeway:
*****Organic Heirloom Tomatoes @ $1.99/lb
*Post Honey bunches of Oats @ $1.50 (must buy 4 and use coupon in-ad)

Raleys:
*** Cheerios, Fruit by the Foot, Betty Crocker Baking stuff..etc @ $1.50/ea (must buy 10 General Mills items)
**Crest @ $1.50/ea

Short post this week, but if you’re bored, go check out the crazy nytimes article about making beer by using salivary enzymes to convert starches to sugars in corn…  mmm. now I’m hungry.

This week…

July 8th, 2009

I am slow and behind on my updating — very busy week.

Last week the coolest thing was the Organic Nectarines at Raley’s Nob Hill. I think I got about 7 pounds.

This week… I think I will have to make a special trip over to Mollie Stone’s for their Organic Nectarines and Plums @ $1.49. Definitely a Steal. They also have their Organic Olive Oil at $5.99/11oz. David (owner of Mollie Stone’s, see comments on last post @ fredsgrocerylist.com) suggested I try it out so I’m going to try to make it out there this week…

[Bay Area] Woohoo!

June 17th, 2009

So… not so exciting week for grocery store ads this week. The only thing that caught my eye was Safeway’s $2.50 /lb organic strawberries … but if I had a Mollie Stone’s close by, I’d definitely be there — they’ve got some good ones:
Organic White Peaches @ $1.99/lb
Organic Grapes @ $1.99/lb
Organic Valencia Oranges @ $0.99/lb
Fly Zapper @$9.99 (maybe Obama’s Daughters can get him one for Father’s day…)

On the other hand, Raley’s / Nob Hill has their Nature’s Path Cereals @ $2.50 / ea. I’m a huge fan of the Heritage Flakes. Don’t get the Heritage O’s — they’re hard enough to cut your gums…

Oh! And exciting news for Jamba Juice this week: Food Launches.
They invited some bloggers to visit too. Check out the cool photos of the food + test kitchen:

I plan on trying a wrap or sandwich tomorrow for lunch, so I’ll probably follow up with my own review of an item every couple of days…

This last weekend some of my dinner-partners asked me why certain supermarkets have higher prices than others. Having spent a couple years in this industry, I feel like I can make a few comments. The general statement? It all comes down to the fact that most of the large supermarkets are public companies. In order meet Wall Street’s unrealistic profit growth expectations, everyone from the CEO down is forced to set and meet sales and profit targets. So how do you easily increase profit without doing anything else? Increase price. I could go on longer about this, but I’m going to let it go for now…

But that’s not why you’re reading this today. You want to know about the deals. This week looks pretty good — check to see if your Safeway ad has a $10 off $50 coupon that’s valid from Wednesday through Saturday.

Safeway:
*****Eating Right Salads @ $1.77/ea
*****Eating Right Frozen Entrees @ $2/ea (but get this — for this upcoming month, if you buy $25 worth of participating products, you get a $10 coupon for your next grocery purchase at Safeway. That means that the effective total price for each of your frozen entrees is $26 (13 entrees) – $10 = $16, or $1.25 per entree. Can you imagine? I could survive on those… I guess that’s why the picture is up there.
