What’s Cheap?
April 15th, 2008
(copied from my post on 4/14)
My brother asked me what a good price for orange juice was and this inspired this particular post. So what’s considered cheap in a food market with egg/dairy/flour costs up more than 30/40/80% year over year? Well, it all depends on how you look at it, but here’s my short list (prices are for San Francisco Bay Area)
- Bananas – $0.19 /ea OR 0.60 /lb (Trader Joe’s — the only place for these prices)
- Organic Bananas - $0.29 / ea OR 0.80 /lb (Trader Joe’s, again)
- Eggs - 1 dozen – $1.79 (Trader Joe’s)
- Organic Milk - half gallon – $3.00 (Raley’s Nob Hill, on ad)
- Orange Juice (Not-from-Concentrate) - 64 oz – $3.00 (if you buy 2 from Safeway)
- Organic Bread, loaf ~ $2.50 (Trader Joe’s)
- Chicken - $1/lb for non-breast – $2/lb for breast meat (Safeway, on sale)
- Pork Loin - $1.50/lb (bone in) (Safeway, on sale)
- Apple Juice – $1.50-$2.00 – 64 oz (Safeway, on sale)
- Yogurt (small) - 8 oz – $0.60 /ea (Safeway)
- Almonds – 1 lb raw – $4 (Raley’s, Trader Joes)
- Organic Frozen Blueberries (Trader Joes)
- Organic Frozen Strawberries (Trader Joes)
I decided not to even start on the seasonal perishable items that can vary from season to season and year to year, but if you have any deep desires to see other items, I’ll try to fill out this page as best as I can. Let me know!
